I have a Eotech 512 on an AR 350 Legend which I do like, but decided to try this Vortex UH-1 due to the quality of the Vortex Viper binoculars I had recently purchased from Kenzie’s and the reviews I had read.
After setting up the UH-1 on my Beowulf (which I am getting consistent 1-1 3/8″ groups at 100 yards with 400 grain handloads and a 12 power scope), I am still able to consistently drill a 1″ spot with the UH-1 from a bench (I am 66 with crappy eyesight!). The clarity is excellent and I believe the 1 MOA reticle spot on the UH-1 is smaller than on the Eotech which makes it easier to do more precision type shooting when required. The circular reticle design is like others that when both eyes are open with moving targets (like pigs) it is very easy to acquire a sight picture.
I will say this, if folks are expecting to see a “painted” reticle with well defined reticle outlines as with a red dot you will be disappointed with any holographic sight. Eotechs and this sight are holographic sights with a pixelated view which some say they are “blurry”. But even with my old eyes, I can pretty much put my 350 Legend and 50 Beowulf rounds in or extremely close to a 1 ” spot at 100 yards or hit running critters with aplomb.
I won’t be buying a red dot because of the large MOA factor they have as I am not a LEO and a red dot might be better for their applications (at least this is my LEO son’s argument), but I usually don’t have to worry about being overrun with hostiles and even if I was, I don’t think they would like the outcome with either sight.
All in all, the Vortex UH-1 is a dandy and I’m glad I have one. On one last note, Vortex’s lifetime no questions asked warranty (regardless if you are the original owner or not) is huge. Eotech can be a bit more finicky EVEN if you are the original owner. If you are looking … check the Vortex UH-1 out.
